IRRIGATION
Tripura has a geographical area of 10,49,169 hectares. It has undulating terrain with low hills interspersed with narrow valleys. 2/3rd of its land is under forest cover. Soil is good for cultivation. Tripura is endowed with high precipitation but skewed distribution resulting into scarcity of surface runoff in dry months. The ground water potential is high but yield of tube well is low.
Land under cultivation is 2,55,241 hectares.
Primarily assessed irrigable land is 1,17,000 hectares.
By concerted action of PWD (WR), RD, Agriculture, TTAADC and Forest Departments with various schemes like Lift, Medium, Diversion; Deep, Shallow and Artisan wells; Pick-up wires, tanks, small pumps, water harvesting and watershed management works, current irrigation coverage is 1,10,524 hectares which accounts for 94.46% of irrigable land and 43.30% of land under cultivation.
